As described verso in black ink by the artist, in his recognizably droll yet matter-of-fact style:
“ARC AND NOT – STRAIGHT LINE / AN ARC WHOSE CENTER IS LOCATED AT THE MIDPOINT OF THE LEFT SIDE AND WHOSE RADIUS IS EQUAL IN LENGTH TO HALF THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE POINT HALFWAY BETWEEN THE MIDPOINT OF THE LEFT SIDE AND THE LOWER LEFT CORNER AND A POINT WHERE TWO LINES WOULD CROSS IF THE FIRST LINE WERE DRAWN FROM THE MIDPOINT OF THE BOTTOM SIDE TO THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER, THE SECOND LINE FROM THE CENTER OF THE WALL AND A POINT HALFWAY BETWEEN THE MIDPOINT OF THE RIGHT SIDE AND THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER, DRAWN FROM THE TOP PART OF THE LEFT SIDE TO THE BOTTOM PART OF THE LEFT SIDE. The drawing was acquired directly from LeWitt by Wynn Kramarsky and later gifted by him to Aardt’s founder. As with provenance, exhibition history is not essential (at least in Aardt’s view) to its desirability – the work has to stand on its own aesthetically without regard to either. But where notable, exhibition history can reflect important aspects of a given work’s “life” in the world. This particular drawing was thus included in Sol LeWitt: A Retrospective, being shown first at the Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, Netherlands, from October 30 to December 13, 1992; thence traveling to the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, England, January 23 to March 28, 1993; Westfalisches Landesmuseum, Munster, Germany, April 18 to June 27, 1993; Henry Moore Sculpture Trust, Leeds City Art Gallery, Leeds, England, August 10 to October 18, 1993; Kunstmuseum, Winterthur, Switzerland, January 21 to March 20, 1994; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and Musee des Beaux-arts de Troucoing, France, April 12 to June 5, 1994; Fundacio Tapies, Barcelona, Spain, June 16 to August 8, 1994; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, September 10 to November 20, 1994; and finally The Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD, February 12 to April 23, 1995.
