Born along the Hudson River at West Point, John Ferguson Weir studied painting with his father, the Hudson River School artist Robert Walter Weir, as did his younger brother, Julian Alden Weir. John Ferguson himself painted a diverse range of subjects, not limited to landscapes and in fact painted some of the earliest industrial scenes in American art history. His landscapes, like this painting, are in all fairness not much distinguished from those of others working in the same detailed, realistic style, although they are marked by a sense of quiet. Weir was also notable as an arts educator (as was his father, a long-time professor of drawing at the Military Academy of West Point), serving as director of the Yale School of Fine Arts for over 40 years.
