Despite being known for the mathematical forms and rigor of his use of materials, e.g., with works laid out in squares, rectangles, etc., Andre also allowed himself the freedom of chance/random structure, something perhaps not surprising in the New York milieu of artists like William Anastasi, musician-composers like John Cage, or choreographers like Lucinda Childs.  According to Andre’s Registry, the artist indicated that he had only done 5 or so “scatter” pieces, this one consisting of found nickel shards from a recycling facility near Glarus, Switzerland, where he often showed at Galerie Tschudi.
