This drawing was originally to have been included by the curator for The Drawing Center’s 2007 show of Saret’s “Gang Drawings” and a loan form was completed, etc. But Saret, in his usual misanthropic mode, then instructed the curator to cancel all loans from private collectors or even from James Cohan Gallery, despite it having been the most instrumental in selling his work. Instead, he insisted as a condition of the show even happening that all the work come from him and that none be sold. In a similar vein, when Wynn Kramarsky was planning an exhibition of Saret’s drawings at his renowned Broadway space – and he owned a number of them – he asked the artist whether he could borrow some additional works to broaden the show. Saret replied, “if you want any more works from me then you’ll have to just [expletive deleted] buy them, but I’m not loaning anything.” No one who knew Wynn would be surprised at how he responded, or that he proceeded with the show on his own.
