Painted back at Bierstadt’s studio in the States from sketches done during one of his trips to Italy in 1853 and 1856-57, this work shows a scene along a mountain walk in Italy, with the stone steps leading to a cross adorned with the instruments of the passion. It was thus included in a 2018 show at The Newark Museum of Art exhibition: The Rockies & The Alps: Bierstadt, Calame, and the Romance of the Mountains. It was then deaccessed in 2021, where it was acquired by Aard’t founder against no other bidders.
